VMTOA Operator Manual
Conducting a Group Ride

Essentials
1. Motorcycle should be clean, roadworthy and have a full tank of fuel.
2. Helmet
3. Safety glasses or helmet with face shield
4. Motorcycle Jacket
5. Wet weather Jacket and Pants (when necessary)
6. Gloves
Optional
1. Blanket for use in sidecar on cold weather days
2. Walkie Talkie
3. First Aid Kit
4. Beany (for use to make helmet a more snug fit)
5. Hair Nets
Members should be aware of and endeavour to achieve the followingstandards;
1. Be polite and courteous to customers (avoid sexual references or subjects that may lead to complaint)
2. Clean, roadworthy motorcycle
3. Ride in a safe and responsible manner whilst transporting passengers.
4. Supply all appropriate safety equipment.
5. Comply with Victorian Taxi Directorate License requirements.
6. Comply with Vicroads requirements
7. On group rides, follow instructions from the operator who has hired you. Do not
distribute your own business cards when you have been sub-
SIDECARS -
Because of the larger configuration of a sidecar outfit and the increased
difficulty in manoeuvring through traffic, solo riders should give right of way to sidecars as priority.
When entering an intersection to make a left/right turning move as far forward as safely possible to allow the following bikes a chance to get through the lights safely and as a group.
Treat the passenger like your own family. Show them the basic sites, explain your direction of travel, what main features they will see, you don’t have to give non stop commentary but some would be great.
e.g. *MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) holds 100,000 people, and hosted the Olympics in 1956 and Commonwealth Games in 2006.
The aim of the VMTOA is to give all S Plate riders a discussion forum and to promote advancement of our industry. It is also to establish an official body that can more easily liaise on behalf of members with other groups and government departments, for example, the Victorian Taxi Directorate and Vicroads. Another benefit the Association offers is the ability to negotiate discounts with suppliers and insurance companies.
Aim
The VMTOA work on continual improvement of relations with the Victorian Taxi Directorate and the Victorian Police and the Security Industry.
We enjoy a good working relationship at events like the Formula 1 Grand Prix and were included in security briefings by police for the Commonwealth Games.
The VMTOA recognise that being informed and good communication in the environment of major Melbourne events and festivals is a vital key element to the success of our Industry, that safety for the public is a primary concern shared by all members.
Promoting Safety & Working Together
This manual is designed as an introduction to the VMTOA and to give all S Plate riders (new and old) an overview of our industry with some recommendations and to establish some minimum standards for conducting Motorcycle Tours in Victoria.
The VMTOA is an incorporated body that was formed by a number of S Plate riders.

Code of Conduct
It is in the interest of all S Plate riders that every ride (whether it be a single bike ride or a large group ride) run safely and smoothly and convey a positive and professional image to all concerned. The following are some points that should be taken into consideration;
1. Arrive in a timely manner at the starting point of the ride, 15 minutes before if possible.
2. Have the necessary equipment available.
3. Listen to instructions from the Road Captain. Briefing of the ride route including final destination.
4. Be polite and courteous to your passenger and conduct yourself in a professional manner.
5. Where possible offer some commentary on the ride and point out some of the main Landmarks, i.e. Parliament House, Telstra Dome, The Shrine etc.
6. Stay in as a tight formation as is possible considering road speed and other safety aspects.
7. Do not pass the ride leader and do not fall behind tail end char lie.

When planning a ride try to incorporate features that will be of interest to your passenger and a route that can be comfortably completed within the time that the ride has been scheduled ie: one hour, two hour etc, on longer rides it is necessary to build in some time for rest, cigarette stops toilet stops and coffee breaks. It is also best to try and plan the ride to be a circuit rather than back tracking on roads already covered.
10. Visual contact where safe to do so and change formation occasionally so your passenger can view the ride from other aspects.
11 Brief passengers at time of booking (eg hot exhaust, other safety issues)
12 Ask your passenger if they may have any special requirements and what size helmet and jacket they may require.
